Healthy Hair: How to assess (and treat!) your hair damage

Good hair is all about healthy hair! But sometimes it’s hard to know the difference, especially if your hair doesn’t look damaged. The truth is, damaged hair comes in several different forms, and there is no one size fits all remedy. However, here are a few common examples of damaged hair, and a few ways to get your hair healthy again!

If you have split ends

Split ends are problematic because wants the end splits, it will continue up the hair shaft resulting in hair damage. Look at your hair strands and identify whether your ends look split, as split ends can be a major source of damage.

The fix: A trim! It might seem counter productive if your goal is hair growth but the truth is trimming your split ends is the only true fix for this type of hair damage. Your hair will grow back longer and stronger!

If you have heat damage

If your curls aren’t bouncing back after a good wash and condition, and you’ve been putting a lot of heat on your hair, you might have some heat damage.

The fix: Protein treatments are a good way to get your curls back to their previous bouncy state. Aphogee is a go-to protein treatment that might be helpful. That said, if the damage is too extensive, a trim might be necessary.

If you have breakage
Some shedding is natural, but if you find yourself losing an excess of hair when detangling, even with conditioner, then chances are you have some hair damage.

The fix: Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! Natural hair loves hydration and dry hair is usually the culprit when it comes to breakage. Natural products containing ingredients like shea butter, honey, aloe vera and of course, water are all good places to start when it comes to moisturizing. And don’t forget to seal those ends—an oil like castor oil will do the job!
